ARLINGTON HEIGHTS GARAGE
Portland, Oregon
This new two-car garage replaces a structurally failing single-car garage for a wonderful 1920’s house in Portland’s Arlington Heights neighborhood. In response to the steep site and limited building area, the garage is sited close to the street and side property line, connected to the house by a wood-and-glass breezeway.
The project provides much more than parking. Atop the garage, a roof terrace captures city views and provides level gardening space. Its plantings, along with those on the metal trellis spanning the street facade, will soften the garage’s appearance. Tucked a story below the vehicle level are storage areas for gardening tools and barbeque equipment, and a spacious deck with a rustic pergola. An open stairway connects all three levels. Materials and detailing match those of the original house.
