AMANDA'S SHOE HOUSE
A backyard in Michigan
When her shoe collection began taking over her house, this shoe collector made the sensible decision to build them their own house in her backyard. The shoe house is a single room, lined with open shelves for shoes. Below the shelves is a wide surface to set shoes on, with drawers below for storing shoe boxes. Boots go on the highest shelf. A deep window seat with pillows overlooks a reflecting pool and birdbath in the garden. At the end of the room is a built- in desk and a comfortable chair. There is good lighting and a soft rug. The flat roof floats above the room atop wraparound clerestory windows, which fill the room with daylight. Radiant floor heating-- supplemented by a small heating stove for cold Michigan winters--creates a warm floor, useful especially for times when the shoe collector is barefoot while contemplating which shoes to wear--boots, flats, heels, pumps, sandals, slippers, mules, clogs, loafers, moccasins, espadrilles, sneakers, stilettos...
