COLUMBIA GORGE RESIDENCE
Mosier, Oregon
This residence occupies a remote, windswept site in the Columbia Gorge National Scenic Area. Extensive effort went into fitting the house snugly into its hillside site, and capturing the magnificent river and mountain views. The design consists of two gabled forms, connected by an enclosed link. The main block houses an open living/dining/kitchen area on the main floor, with a study/guest room, laundry area, bathroom and “Mad Scientist Workroom” below. The smaller form houses the master suite above the garage. A dumbwaiter transports firewood and supplies between the two levels. A screened porch on the leeward side provides sheltered outdoor living space and views to the upper hillside.
Construction is of Rastra Block, with
concrete radiant-heat floors. Most windows
are paired, wooden inswing casements, with
operable shutters for sun control and
security. Stucco walls and a tile roof will
allow the house to merge visually with the
landscape. A separate barn will house
vehicles, a workshop and a large loft area.
