artist's studio
The owner, a sculptor, outgrew her home studio. The solution was to build a new studio on top of the existing detached garage, set into the hillside at the edge of a beautiful garden. Stone steps lead up the side of the garage to a covered porch. An entry alcove opens to a high-ceilinged space, with tall windows to cast directional light, plenty of wall space to pin up drawings, and concrete floors with radiant heat for ease of maintenance and comfort. At the rear are a separate storage/kiln room and bathroom. The studio overlooks the garden, with views of the surrounding trees and city skyline beyond. It is designed to be convertible into a separate living unit, with the storage room sized to accommodate a small kitchen.
