RIVER RESIDENCE
This project, which replaces the clients’
existing house on wooded Willamette River
frontage, consists of two structures linked by
a covered walkway to define a central court.
The main residence is set perpendicular to
the river, preserving space for a riverfront
lawn and opening up views from the entry
court. The two-story studio served as the
family’s living quarters while the main house
was built. All major living spaces face the
water. Living and dining areas occupy a
high-ceilinged space enclosed by a curving
window wall, and topped by a roof terrace.
A dramatic elliptical stair tower leads to
bedrooms upstairs. The house is distinctly
modern, adapted for the Northwest’s light
and climate. Sloping metal roofs, deep
eaves, numerous canopies and trellises,
and large windows set into integrally-colored
stucco walls respond to site and climactic
conditions, and help the structures merge
into their natural, wooded setting.
