GORGE RESIDENCE
White Salmon, Washington

This house sits at the top of a sloping meadow overlooking Northwestern Lake and the forested hills above the Columbia Gorge. The simple, two-story rectangular form is economical and energy efficient. Main living spaces with generously-sized windows are concentrated on the broad south side to take advantage of sunlight and views, while bathroom and utility spaces with smaller windows are on the north. A south-facing, partially screened porch adjacent to the living and dining areas provides shaded outdoor living space in summer, while allowing the lower winter sun to penetrate deep into the interior. A separate garage and studio building to be built near the house will create a welcoming entry court at the top of the site.

This house was featured in four issues of Home Magazine (November 1995, and February, July/August, and October 1996) and the Oregonian (August 20, 1995). It appears on the cover of the book Baths: Your Guide to Planning and Remodeling (Better Homes and Gardens Publications) and is featured in the books Bungalow Style and Dream Homes of the Pacific Northwest.
