FRIENDS OF TREES
Portland, Oregon

The headquarters of this community tree-planting organization was developed in conjunction with the office building on the same site.  The original building was dilapidated after years of neglect, and its $4,000 assessed valuation was generous.  The interior was completely remodeled for office use, and the exterior clad in galvanized metal siding with new windows, roofing and brightly painted trim.  In a second phase of work, the basement was converted to office use, and a new storefront added along the street.  Entry to the building is from a path framed by two magnificent cherry trees, part of the orchard which originally occupied the site.

In recognition of its role as a catalyst in the revitalization of inner Northeast Portland as well as its design quality, this project was named AIA Project of the Month by the Portland Chapter/American Institute of Architects and the Daily Journal of Commerce.
