WILLAMETTE RIVER RESIDENCE
Portland, Oregon
This house is designed for a small lot abutting a park along the Willamette River. Hidden from the street, it is entered through a concrete portal, then across an entry bridge over a pool. The main form is a massive rectangle of concrete-filled, insulated block, covered in rough black stucco. The austerity of the underlying form is countered by projecting balconies, bays, canopies, and lushly landscaped decks and roof terraces.
The ground level contains home office space, convertible to an apartment. Above this is a two-story high living/dining/kitchen space, with a landscaped deck and massive bay window overlooking the park and river. Above the living area is a mezzanine containing a bedroom and bathroom. The top floor houses the master suite, opening onto a glass-tiled roof terrace with sweeping park and river views. Atop the roof is a bamboo-and-tiki grove, with 360-degree views of the river, park, forested hills, and mountains. A separate studio building provides additional working or living space.
