LADD'S ADDITION RESIDENCE
Portland, Oregon
Occupying perhaps the last vacant lot in Portland's Ladd's Addition Historic District, this new house accommodates the requirements of contemporary living while fitting into the early-twentieth-century neighborhood. The exterior design and materials are patterned after historic neighbors. The interior features an open floor plan, high ceilings, daylight-filled rooms (all living spaces have windows on at least two sides) and close connections to outdoor living areas. The wrap-around porch, bay windows, projecting stair bay, and a built-in window seat enhance visual interest and livability.
The house incorporates numerous sustainable design and construction features, including environmentally-friendly materials and finishes, solar hot water panels, provisions for solar photovoltaic panels, and a high-mass fireplace that will provide a substantial portion of the home's heating.
