SYLVAN RESIDENCE ALTERATION

Portland, Oregon

This project enlarged and transformed a 1940’s house that had been outgrown by its family. The structure was gutted down to the studs. The roof was removed, and a new second floor built to accommodate the master suite and three children’s bedrooms, all clustered around a central sitting area opening onto a roof terrace. A sunroom/library was added to the end of the house. To the rear, the dining room and kitchen were enlarged, and a garden room added with French doors opening onto an expanded rear terrace. The sloping front and rear yards were terraced and replanted for vastly improved livability. The light, informal interior spaces feature charming, unpretentious finishes and furnishings. Outside, dormers, bays, and changes in massing reduce the visual impact of the expansion, and allow the form of the original house to remain intact.
